For this college senior, a trip to Antarctica became possible with other people from a college and university as the National Science Foundation provided the necessary funds. It was in early February when the group left on a research vessel from Punta Arenas Chile. Located on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula was their first stop, the Larsen Ice Shelf, which was unexplored. The location has not yet been explored in the past. While the boat moved slowly, sonar was utilized to measure the depth of the ocean. Every part of their exploits was videotaped by the students and researchers who also collected water and sediment samples from the deck. Such samples will not be easy to analyze.
Considering modern global warming, they will be evaluating mud from its water content to the overall composition to make a possible correlation. As said by the students, the trip is truly an extraordinary opportunity. Such a trip offers a face to face encounter with life, according to a student. When the time for graduate school arrives, this student who is a native of Scotland will take up global warming. Another student confirms that she wouldn’t mind being on a ship for the rest of her life, who will continue her studies next year at one university’s school of Oceanography.
For them, even the most severe weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere can be managed. A close comparison was Upstate New York. When the sun rises at 430 am and sets at 930 pm the cold days are not as intense as this. Looking out the window was not as easy when the sun was so bright. Regardless of civilization being limited, everyday there was science. If you were a student, a typical shift would be midnight to noon or vice versa. You’d want to encounter everything. The best day of her life was when they explored Vega Island. She found it rather amazing to be part of a place where only 10 other people ever set foot on.
The students actually missed five weeks of classes. Limited schoolwork was accomplished not only because of the environmental dangers involved with the vessel but also due to the busy schedules they had. Being on a constantly moving ship does not help either. They had no means of maximizing communication with people back home. The students and faculty grew close to one another because of the common living spaces and the lack of distractions. Any escape is a farfetched idea for a student. Bringing people together is a mix of a desolate location plus a bleak environment.
They provided the customs officials with explanations for their unusual cargo through the documents prepared for the samples they decided to place inside coolers when they headed for the United States. For a student it was also necessary to bring 323 digital pictures and five rolls of film. There was another student who joined the trip last year and chose to experience the surroundings instead. Not everything could be captured. There is a need to appreciate what your surroundings are offering.

What Can We Do for Environment–Water levels of Three Gorges Dam reaches new highs

YICHANG, is a small city in Hubei Province,China - Flood flow is set to peak again on Monday at China’s Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River, forcing the water levels of the dam’s reservoir to surge again.
Engineers of the dam, located in Yichang City, central Hubei Province, said the water level of the Three Gorges reservoir, which dropped a few centimeters over the weekend, might now rise to break its record high of the year - 158.86 meters, or 13.86 meters above the warning line.
Authorities said a new round of flood waters would gush into the Three Gorges reservoir on Monday after days of rainstorms swelled branches of the Yangtze on the upper reaches.
On last Tuesday, the flow on the river’s upper reaches topped 70,000 cubic meters a second when it reached the Three Gorges reservoir, about 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people and the highest level since the dam was completed last year.
Engineers said Monday’s flood flow is not likely to exceed last Tuesday’s peak.
Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of last Friday. Premier Wen Jiabo has told local authorities to be fully aware of the “grave flood-control situation” and to prepare for more serious flooding.
