Tannoy Ltd is an English manufacturer of loudspeakers and public-address (PA) systems. The company was founded as Tulsemere Manufacturing Company in London in 1926.

The name Tannoy is a syllabic abbreviation of tantalum alloy, which was the material used in a type of electrolytic rectifier developed by the company. The brand had been trademarked by 10 March 1932, on which date the Tulsemere Manufacturing Company was formally registered as Guy R. Fountain Limited.

It became a household name as a result of supplying PA systems to the armed forces during World War II, and to Butlins and Pontins holiday camps after the war. This usage is current as late as early 2010. Tannoy is now based in Coatbridge in Scotland, and is part of the Danish-based TC Group. Tannoy is famous for its ‘Dual Concentric’ speaker design which places the tweeter behind the centre of the medium or bass driver. ‘Dual Concentric’ is a trademark although Tannoy is not the only speaker manufacturer to design coaxial drivers. Tannoy’s image is particularly linked to studio monitors on the one hand and its Prestige range of home speakers on the other. Prestige speakers use Dual Concentric speakers and are easily recognisable by their ‘vintage’ design.

The term ‘tannoy’ is often used generically in colloquial English throughout the British Commonwealth to mean any public-address system, particularly those used for announcements in public places; although the word is a registered trademark, it has become a genericised trademark. The company’s intellectual property department keeps a close eye on the media and will often write to publications who use its trade name without a capital letter or as a generic term for PA systems, in order to preserve its trademark.

Situated in Malagos, the Philippine Eagle Center serves as temporary home and a breeding center for the critically endangered bird. The Philippine Eagle, one of the tallest and biggest birds in the world, usually feeds on flying lemurs, wild cats, and squirrels.

Kadayawan Festival

The perfect time to visit Davao would be August, when the city stages one of the most colorful festivals in the Philippines. Kadayawan Festival is an annual thanksgiving celebration for a bountiful harvest. Various activities, including street dancing, tribal parades, trade fairs, flower shows, and horse fight competitions, are lined up during the weeklong festival.

GAP Farming Orchard

You can also embark on a nature trip while in Davao. GAP Farming Orchard is a perfect place to escape city life and pollution. It has well-maintained cottages and camp sites, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and horseback riding facilities. Exotic flowers and tropical fruits can be found in the garden. A giant one-eyed monster confined in a tunnel built during the Japanese occupation is also a major attraction at the resort.

There are many other things to do in Davao. For adventure seekers, a visit to Camp Sabros in Mt. Apo or to Eden Nature Park for a thrilling zip line experience is a must. For those who love swimming and other water activities, go to Samal Island, which is famous for its white-sand beaches.
