A Long Walk Up Ben Nevis
By Sarah James
Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland; its peak rises over 1300 meters above sea level. Walking Ben Nevis is a breath taking experience in many ways. The path begins at sea level and trekking up to the top is an event that is well worth the effort.
If you are new to this type of sport it is advised that you stick to the path going up and coming back. The Scottish weather can change at any second leaving you immersed in fog and searching for your footing.
Make sure you have your camera ready at all times. As you ascend the mountain the views are awesome and stopping to snap a few shots can also double as a quick rest stop. When you are taking pictures remember that the fog can set in quickly so take the shots while you have them.
On first attempt to climb the mountain you will probably need at least five hours to reach the top. More experienced walkers can accomplish this faster, but the point of the walk to enjoy the beauty and absorb the majesty of your surroundings not race to the finish. Going down the mountain will be much faster, probably half the length of time, because the strain is eased when you walk down an incline.
The path is rocky and uneven and you should make sure that you wear the appropriate type of footwear to manage the trail. The weather will change as you climb so additional clothing is recommended. Wear layers or bring some extra clothes in a backpack because as you climb you will find snow!
Pack yourself some supplies for along the way. Quick little snacks help you recharge your energy levels and a thermos of hot drink will be nice once you hit the snow. Throw a couple of band aids in your pack just in case those new hiking boots give you some blisters.
This is an experience that you can not pass up. I could not have imagined the wealth of beauty, the physical exertion or the complete satisfaction you receive from completing this trek. Whatever you do, when you are in the area, make sure you have reserved two full days to enjoy this walk. You will need a complete day to walk the mountain and then you will need a full day to rest afterwards. Once you develop your film and relive the experience you will be dying to return and walk the path again.
